Quick verdict
A battery maintainer (often called a trickle charger) keeps a stored car, motorcycle, boat or mower battery topped up so it starts in spring. The Battery Tender Plus ($64.95) is the classic choice: 1.25 amps for 12V lead-acid, AGM and gel batteries, automatic float mode, and a 10-year warranty, longer than NOCO (3 years) or CTEK (5 years). RevZilla customers rate it 4.9 out of 5 from 311 ratings.
The honest part: the Plus has no lithium mode, no 6V setting and no repair (desulfation) mode, while NOCO’s GENIUS1 costs $29.95 and its GENIUS5 $69.95 with all three. Car and Driver’s Best Overall pick is the NOCO Genius 1, not a Battery Tender. Battery Tender’s own pages also contradict themselves on warranty lengths and on whether you can leave it connected forever.
Our picks: Battery Tender Plus if you want the longest warranty for a lead-acid or AGM battery. Junior Multi-Chemistry ($52.95) for lithium motorcycle batteries. Power Tender 3 Amp ($94.95), Car and Driver’s and Popular Mechanics’ “Easiest to Use,” if you also want faster charging and 6V support.

Battery Tender Plus: the classic
The Plus maintains 12V lead-acid, AGM and gel batteries from 14 to 80 amp-hours. Clip it on or use the included ring terminals, and it charges then switches to float mode to hold the battery at full without boiling it. It’s the only Battery Tender with the 10-year warranty. What it doesn’t do: lithium batteries, 6V classics, or reviving a battery that’s already sulfated.

For lithium batteries: Junior Multi-Chemistry
Many newer motorcycles and powersports use lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, which need a lithium-specific charge profile. The Junior Multi-Chemistry ($52.95) has a lead-acid/lithium selector and a 5-year warranty. Car and Driver named the Junior its “Best for Powersports,” but noted it can’t bring a dead car battery back.

Can you leave a Battery Tender connected all winter?
Battery Tender’s product page says there’s “no overcharge risk,” and float mode is designed for long storage. But its own support FAQ says to “check on the battery at least once every couple of weeks.” Our advice: leave it connected, but look at it now and then, especially with older or flooded batteries that can lose water.
What reviewers say

- Popular Mechanics (updated October 2026): 3-Amp “Easiest to Use” and the 15 Amp “Best Rapid Charger for Occasional Use.”
- Road & Track (updated October 2026): named the Battery Tender 15 Amp its “Top Pick.”
- RevZilla customers: 4.9 out of 5 from 311 ratings for the Plus.
Battery Tender vs NOCO and CTEK
| Charger | Price | Lithium | 6V | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Tender Plus 1.25A | $64.95 | No | No | 10 years |
| Battery Tender Junior Multi-Chemistry | $52.95 | Yes | No | 5 years |
| NOCO GENIUS1 | $29.95 | Yes | Yes | 3 years |
| NOCO GENIUS5 | $69.95 | Yes | Yes | 3 years |
| CTEK MXS 5.0 | $99 (sale, $119.99 list) | No | No (12V only) | 5 years |
NOCO gives you more features for less money; Battery Tender gives you a longer warranty and a simpler, proven design. For a single lead-acid car or truck battery in storage, the Plus is hard to beat on peace of mind. For a mixed garage with lithium, 6V and sulfated batteries, a NOCO GENIUS5 does more.
Claims and fine print we checked
- “Invented the modern battery maintainer in 1965”: the Plus page says so, but the company’s own press says the Battery Tender brand launched in 1988 (the company itself dates to 1965), and a federal appeals court described the brand’s start as the early 1990s.
- Trademark: in August 2026 the Eleventh Circuit held that “Battery Tender” is a protected trademark, not a generic term, and upheld a $12.1 million award against NOCO.
- Contradictory specs: some Power Tender pages list a 3-year warranty in the text and 5 years in the spec box, and the “10 Amp” Power Tender says it ships “with 8 AMP power supply.”
- Buy direct: the warranty is void from “unauthorized” sellers, and a lookalike site, batterytender.shop, has a very low ScamAdviser trust score. Use batterytender.com.
- Returns: 30 days for batterytender.com purchases; you pay return shipping and original shipping isn’t refunded; incomplete returns may get a restocking fee.
Who should buy a Battery Tender
- Good fit: a car, truck, boat, RV or mower with a lead-acid or AGM battery that sits for weeks or months, where a 10-year warranty matters.
- Skip it if: you need lithium, 6V and desulfation in one charger for less (NOCO GENIUS5), or you need to revive a dead car battery quickly (get a higher-amp charger).
FAQ
Is the Battery Tender Plus worth it?
For maintaining a stored 12V lead-acid or AGM battery, yes: it’s simple, rated 4.9/5 by RevZilla customers, and has a 10-year warranty. If you need lithium or 6V support, a NOCO GENIUS5 adds both for about the same price.
Can I leave a Battery Tender on all the time?
It’s designed to be left connected and switches to float mode when the battery is full. Battery Tender’s own FAQ still recommends checking the battery every couple of weeks.
Does the Battery Tender Plus work on lithium batteries?
No. For lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, use a lithium-capable model like the Battery Tender Junior Multi-Chemistry ($52.95).
What is the difference between the Battery Tender Plus and Junior?
The Plus is 1.25 amps for car-size 12V batteries with a 10-year warranty. The Junior is 0.75 to 1 amp for smaller powersports batteries; the Junior Multi-Chemistry also handles lithium. Juniors can’t revive a dead car battery.
Battery Tender vs NOCO: which is better?
NOCO GENIUS chargers cost less (GENIUS1 $29.95, GENIUS5 $69.95) and add lithium, 6V and repair modes, and Car and Driver picked the NOCO Genius 1 as Best Overall. Battery Tender’s Plus has a much longer warranty (10 years versus 3).
What is the Battery Tender warranty?
10 years on the Battery Tender Plus 12V 1.25A; other models range from 3 to 5 years, and Battery Tender’s pages sometimes list different numbers. It’s void if you buy from an unauthorized seller.
Where are Battery Tender chargers made?
Battery Tender is a family-owned company in DeLand, Florida, but it doesn’t disclose where its chargers are manufactured, and we couldn’t verify it.
Can a battery maintainer charge a dead battery?
Low-amp maintainers like the Plus or Junior aren’t built to revive a fully dead car battery. Use a higher-amp charger like the Power Tender 3 Amp or 15 Amp, then switch to a maintainer for storage.
