Quick answer: the best rain boots for men

We read the four independent rain boot roundups updated in 2026: Field & Stream, plus three that tested boots hands-on (Treeline Review, OutdoorGearLab and CleverHiker, which between them wore dozens of pairs through rain, mud, decks and wading tests). Then we checked each brand’s price, warranty, returns and customer record.

    • Best everyday and deck boot: XTRATUF 6″ Ankle Deck Boot ($115). The only boot picked by all four roundups.
    • Best tall boot for wet work and grip: XTRATUF 15″ Legacy ($160). Treeline Review’s Best Overall after testing 30+ models.
    • Highest-scoring tall boot: Muck Boot Wetland ($165). OutdoorGearLab’s Best Overall (76/100), and an award winner at Treeline and CleverHiker too.
    • Best for deep cold: BOGS Workman ($185). CleverHiker’s top-rated boot (4.8/5), comfort-rated to -40°F.
    • Best budget pick: Baffin Enduro ($70). OutdoorGearLab’s Best Bang for Your Buck and CleverHiker’s Best Budget; made in Canada.

Read this first: the testers don’t fully agree. Field & Stream and Treeline put XTRATUF on top, while OutdoorGearLab’s scores rank the Muck Wetland (76) above both XTRATUF boots (64 and 61), and CleverHiker rates the BOGS Workman highest (4.8 vs 4.5 for both XTRATUFs). XTRATUF and Muck Boot are also owned by the same company, Rocky Brands. And most of these boots carry only a 1-year warranty. Details are in the fine print below.

Best everyday and deck boot: XTRATUF 6″ Ankle Deck Boot

It’s the only boot all four 2026 roundups picked. Field & Stream called it “the best all around rain boots”; Treeline named it Best Ankle boot for its hands-free slide-on, comfort and anti-slip sole; OutdoorGearLab named it its Best Every Day Deck Boot for the easy slip-on and light weight. At $115 it’s waterproof rubber with a non-marking sole.

The catches: at 6 inches tall, Treeline found feet can get wet in downpours and rocks get in through the wide opening, and OutdoorGearLab saw cracks develop at the toe flex after a couple of years of use. CleverHiker found it heavy, with minimal traction and no arch support, while Treeline praised its grip, so testers split on traction. XTRATUF says this boot isn’t acid or chemical resistant or commercial grade, the warranty is 1 year (waterproofness is guaranteed for 6 months), and on xtratuf.com owners rate it 4.1 out of 5 from 1,571 reviews, with a 3.3 out of 5 quality score. Best tall boot for wet work: XTRATUF 15″ Legacy

Treeline Review tested more than 30 models over four years in Alaska, California, Maine and Iowa and named the Legacy its Best Overall, writing that “their traction on the slip resistant chevron rubber sole is unbeatable.” It’s XTRATUF’s commercial-grade boot: 15 inches of triple-dipped latex neoprene, about 5.15 pounds, for $160. CleverHiker gave it Best Puddle-Jumper (4.5/5).

The catches: Treeline says you may need to size down from your street shoe and it gets toasty in warm weather; CleverHiker found it heavy with cold spots near the toes and called the styling divisive. OutdoorGearLab scored it 64, below the Muck Wetland.

Highest-scoring tall boot: Muck Boot Wetland

The Wetland ($165) is OutdoorGearLab’s Best Overall rain boot with the highest score in its test (76/100), for its tall flood height, excellent traction and enough warmth to wear in winter. Treeline named it Best Insulated work boot (“rugged, durable, warm, comfortable, easy to stand in for multiple hours”), and CleverHiker Best Bad-Weather boot. Muck lists it at 18 inches tall, with a rubber shell over 5mm neoprene.

The catches: OutdoorGearLab found it too work-oriented for everyday use and clunky on firm ground, and Treeline says it gets toasty above 50°F. Muck Boot’s Trustpilot score is 1.5 out of 5 from 113 reviews, 83% one-star. The warranty is 1 year. Muck and XTRATUF share an owner (Rocky Brands), and returns over $99 are free within 30 days.

Best for deep cold: BOGS Workman

CleverHiker rated the BOGS Workman ($185) its best rain boot overall (4.8/5): built for heavy-duty work, durable, reinforced in high-wear areas, with good traction. BOGS says it’s comfort-rated to -40°F with 5mm neoprene insulation, and it meets ASTM safety standards including an electrical-hazard rating. If you want the same warmth for less, the BOGS Classic Seamless Tall ($150, also rated to -40°F) was CleverHiker’s Best Insulated boot.

The catches: it’s heavy (4.23 pounds a pair in a men’s 10, per BOGS), it has a 1-year warranty, and BOGS deducts $10 from refunds on orders of sale items only. BOGS (owned by Weyco Group) has an A+ BBB rating with just 1 complaint in 3 years, but a 2.3 Trustpilot score from only 45 reviews.

Best budget rain boot: Baffin Enduro

At $70, the Baffin Enduro won OutdoorGearLab’s Best Bang for Your Buck and CleverHiker’s Best Budget. It’s a 16-inch, fully molded boot made in Canada from oil- and acid-resistant material, with a high flood height and deep lugs. OutdoorGearLab: solid construction for rough terrain.

The catches: it isn’t insulated, OutdoorGearLab called the insole flimsy, CleverHiker found traction poor on slick surfaces and the fit roomy, and Baffin deducts an $8 label fee from US refunds (waived for exchanges). Canada Goose agreed in August 2026 to sell Baffin to Canadian bootmaker L.P. Royer.

For walking around town: Blundstone #500 and the L.L.Bean Boot

Three testers gave awards to the Blundstone #500 Chelsea ($209.95) as a rain boot you can wear all day in town: Treeline (Best Walking), OutdoorGearLab (Most Stylish) and CleverHiker (Best Casual). But Blundstone itself only calls the leather “water-resistant,” not waterproof, and CleverHiker listed “only water-resistant” as a con, so it’s for wet sidewalks, not puddles.

The L.L.Bean 8″ Bean Boot won Treeline’s Best Lace-Up and a 4.6 from CleverHiker for its classic duck-boot design, but Treeline warns water can seep in through the tongue gusset and it runs large, and OutdoorGearLab scored Bean Boots lowest in its test (43).

    How to choose rain boots

    • Height: ankle deck boots (6 inches) slip on and off fast for boats, gardens and errands but let water in during heavy rain; tall boots (15 to 18 inches) handle puddles, mud and wading.
    • Warmth: plain rubber boots stay cooler; neoprene-insulated boots like the Muck Wetland and BOGS Workman keep you warm in winter but run hot in mild weather.
    • Work use: if you work around fish slime, fuel or chemicals, choose a commercial-grade boot like the XTRATUF Legacy or Baffin Enduro; XTRATUF says its Ankle Deck Boot isn’t chemical resistant.
    • Fit: Treeline suggests sizing down in XTRATUF Legacy and notes the Bean Boot runs large; buy where returns are free in case you need to swap sizes.

Several of these Trustpilot scores rest on very few reviews (14 to 113), so treat them as a warning sign rather than a verdict. We found no safety recalls for any of these boots; the only recall was Grundens’ October 2025 recall of youth rain jackets with drawstrings, not boots.

    FAQ

What are the best rain boots for men in 2026?

The XTRATUF 6″ Ankle Deck Boot is the only boot picked by all four 2026 roundups we read (Field & Stream, Treeline, OutdoorGearLab and CleverHiker). For tall coverage, Treeline’s top pick is the XTRATUF Legacy and OutdoorGearLab’s is the Muck Boot Wetland.

XTRATUF vs Muck Boot: which is better?

It depends on the use. XTRATUF’s Ankle Deck Boot won more awards as an everyday and deck boot, and Treeline rated the XTRATUF Legacy its best overall. OutdoorGearLab scored the insulated Muck Wetland highest (76 vs 64 for the Legacy), and it’s warmer for winter. Both brands are owned by Rocky Brands.

    Are XTRATUF boots worth it?

For decks, rain and everyday wet weather, testers agree: the Ankle Deck Boot won awards from all four roundups. The trade-offs are a 1-year warranty (6 months on waterproofness), reports of toe-flex cracks after a couple of years (OutdoorGearLab), and a 3.3 out of 5 quality score from owners on xtratuf.com.

Are deck boots good in heavy rain?

Only up to a point. At 6 inches tall, Treeline found feet can get wet in downpours through the wide opening. For heavy rain, puddles or mud, choose a tall boot like the XTRATUF Legacy or Muck Wetland.

    Which rain boots are warmest?

The BOGS Workman and BOGS Classic Seamless Tall are comfort-rated to -40°F by BOGS, and the Muck Wetland uses 5mm neoprene. Uninsulated rubber boots like the XTRATUF Ankle Deck Boot and Baffin Enduro are better for mild weather.

    Are Blundstones waterproof?

Blundstone describes the #500’s leather as water-resistant, not waterproof. Testers liked it for walking around town in wet weather, but it isn’t a puddle boot.

Should I size up or down in rain boots?

It varies by brand. Treeline says you may need to size down in the XTRATUF Legacy and that the L.L.Bean Boot runs large, and CleverHiker found the Baffin Enduro roomy. Buy where returns are free so you can swap sizes.

What are the cheapest good rain boots?

The Baffin Enduro at $70 won Best Bang for Your Buck at OutdoorGearLab and Best Budget at CleverHiker. It isn’t insulated, and CleverHiker found its traction poor on slick surfaces.
