    Is IONOS legit?

Yes. IONOS is a real, established web host, not a scam. It started in 1988 as 1&1 in Germany (IONOS), and its parent company, IONOS Group SE, is listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange (Wikipedia). Its US company, IONOS Inc., is based in Philadelphia and has been BBB accredited since 2015, with an A- rating (BBB). On Trustpilot it scores 4.6 from 45,694 reviews (Trustpilot).

The honest part: the famous $1 deal is for the first year only. The Plus plan then renews at $14 a month, 14 times the intro price. Refunds are limited, plans renew automatically, and 57% of IONOS’s BBB complaints are about billing (291 of 508 in 3 years), including charges after customers thought they had cancelled (BBB complaints).

    Pros

    • ✓ Cheap first year: Plus is $1/mo, Essential $4/mo (1-year term)
    • ✓ Unlimited websites on every shared plan
    • ✓ Daily backups on every plan, kept 14 days, with free self-service restore
    • ✓ 24/7 phone, chat and email support, plus a free personal consultant
    • ✓ 99.99% uptime guarantee in its terms
    • ✓ BBB A-, accredited; publicly listed parent company

    Cons

    • ✗ Big renewal jump: Plus goes from $1 to $14/mo after year one
    • ✗ Money-back guarantee covers only certain fees for the first billing cycle
    • ✗ Auto-renews; cancelling needs 30 days’ notice
    • ✗ 57% of BBB complaints are billing problems
    • ✗ Failed a 100-visitor load test in HostingStep’s benchmark
    • ✗ Its own control panel, not cPanel; few email accounts on cheap plans

Plan (1-year term)First yearThenPer year after
    Essential$4/mo ($48)$8/mo$96
    Starter$6/mo ($72)$10/mo$120
    Plus (bestseller)$1/mo ($12)$14/mo$168
    Ultimate$10/mo ($120)$18/mo$216

Prices from IONOS’s web hosting page on November 1, 2026. The yearly totals are our math (monthly price x 12). All four plans include unlimited websites, a free domain for the first year, a Wildcard SSL certificate and daily backups (IONOS).

    • Best long-term value: Essential. It renews at $8/mo, the lowest of the four, with 100 GB of storage. If you’ll keep your site more than a year, Essential costs less than Plus from year two on.
    • Plus is a first-year deal. $12 for year one is hard to beat, but at $168 a year after that it’s the second most expensive plan to keep.
    • WordPress plans are separate and host 1 site each: Start $5/mo then $8, Grow $1/mo then $12, Boost $12/mo then $17 (IONOS).

    Refunds and cancelling

This is where most IONOS complaints come from, so read it before you buy.

    • Money-back guarantee: claims must be made “within 30 days from the initial date of order,” and the guarantee is “limited to the refund of certain setup fees and the monthly fee for the first billing cycle.” Domains, SSL certificates and add-ons are excluded, and switching packages ends your eligibility (IONOS money-back terms).
    • Prepaid terms: IONOS’s general terms say fees for terms longer than a month are “NON-REFUNDABLE” and renew for the same length; there’s no prorated refund if you cancel early (IONOS terms). It isn’t clear from the official pages whether a full prepaid year is refunded inside the first 30 days, so ask support before you buy.
    • Auto-renewal: plans renew automatically unless you turn auto-renew off in your account before the term ends. On terms of 12 months or more, IONOS says it emails a reminder 30 to 45 days before the deadline (IONOS terms).
    • How to cancel: you can cancel online (My account, then Contracts & subscriptions, then Cancel contract), by phone, or by email from your registered address (IONOS help). The terms require 30 days’ notice (IONOS terms). Some recent BBB complaints still describe being told to call or being held to a 12-month term (BBB).

Our tip: the day you sign up, put a reminder in your calendar 60 days before renewal, and turn off auto-renew if you might leave.

    Speed and uptime

    • Uptime guarantee: 99.99%. If IONOS falls short, you can request a credit proportional to the downtime, usable only on IONOS services, not cash (IONOS terms).
    • HostingStep’s benchmark (Essential plan, October to December 2025): 99.99% uptime and a 545 ms US response time, but the 100-visitor load test failed with a 65.4% error rate. Hostinger’s Premium plan on the same page responded in 483 ms and passed the load test (HostingStep). HostingStep earns affiliate commissions, and IONOS had only one quarter of data.
    • What that means: fine for a small blog or business site, but not the host we’d pick for a site that expects traffic spikes.

    Support

IONOS says its experts are available by phone, chat or email (IONOS), 24/7 (IONOS about page), and every customer can turn on a free personal consultant in their account (IONOS help). That’s more than many cheap hosts offer: Hostinger, for example, has no phone support.

    Backups and features

    • Backups: daily backups of your files and databases, kept for 14 days, which you can restore yourself from your account (IONOS help). IONOS’s terms still make you responsible for keeping your own backups (IONOS terms).
    • Control panel: IONOS uses its own panel, not cPanel (IONOS).
    • Email: 1 account on Essential, 2 on Starter, 4 on Plus (IONOS). PCMag called this out as a weak spot (PCMag).

    What experts say

    • PCMag (June 2025) gave IONOS an Editors’ Choice for cloud hosting and said “companies in need of feature-rich, reasonably priced hosting should take a look,” while criticizing the small number of email accounts (PCMag).
    • AllAboutCookies (updated August 2026) called it “a good web host for most users” and named it its best-value pick, but flagged frequent upsells in the dashboard and no CDN (AllAboutCookies).

IONOS prices from IONOS; Hostinger prices from Hostinger (Black Friday prices), both November 1, 2026. Our take: IONOS is the cheaper first year and has phone support. Hostinger locks in a low price for 4 years and has far fewer complaints. Our verdict

IONOS is legit and a good deal if you go in with your eyes open. For a small site that needs phone support and daily backups, it’s solid value, and Essential is the plan to keep long term. Just treat the $1 Plus price as a one-year deal, set a reminder before renewal, and know that refunds are limited.
