Quick verdict: is Samsonite good luggage?
Yes, for the money, with two big catches. Samsonite has made luggage since 1910 and is the largest luggage company in the world (it also owns TUMI and American Tourister). Independent testers keep picking its mid-priced bags: the Freeform was OutdoorGearLab’s Best Buy and Forbes Vetted’s Best Value carry-on, the Outline Pro was Business Insider’s best hard-sided carry-on, and Good Housekeeping named Samsonite its best overall luggage brand.
The catches: Samsonite’s 10-year warranty covers manufacturing defects only. It excludes airline damage, and Samsonite’s FAQ says cracked or dented luggage “is not considered a manufacturing defect.” Its customer service record is poor: the BBB rates it D- for failing to respond to 25 complaints. And most of its US carry-ons are 23 x 15 x 10 inches, bigger on paper than the 22 x 14 x 9 limit American and Delta publish.
Our take: buy Samsonite on sale if you want a good hardside bag for a fair price and you’re fine treating the warranty as defect cover only. If you want airline damage covered or a company with a better complaint record, look at the alternatives below.
Pros
- ✓ Freeform: OutdoorGearLab Best Buy and Forbes Best Value carry-on
- ✓ Outline Pro: Business Insider’s best hard-sided carry-on
- ✓ Good Housekeeping’s best overall luggage brand (July 2026)
- ✓ Frequent sales: Freeform $149.99, Voltage DLX Global $124.99 on Nov 3, 2026
- ✓ Two carry-ons that truly fit 22 x 14 x 9: Voltage DLX Global and Proxis Global
- ✓ No CPSC luggage recall found
Cons
- ✗ Warranty excludes airline damage; cracked or dented shells count as not a defect
- ✗ You pay shipping to the repair center for warranty claims
- ✗ BBB D-, not accredited, 25 complaints unanswered (73 in 3 years)
- ✗ Trustpilot 3.8 but 59% of reviews are one-star
- ✗ Domestic carry-ons are 23 x 15 x 10, over the 22 x 14 x 9 limit on paper
- ✗ Return window is 90 days on one page and 60 on others; $14.99 return fee
The warranty: what Samsonite really covers
We put this before the bags because it’s where most complaints come from. Samsonite’s warranty page lists four versions: a Limited 10 Year Global Warranty, 5-year and 3-year versions, and a lifetime “Limited Global Warranty.” Every carry-on product page we read (Freeform, Outline Pro, Voltage DLX, Proxis, C-Lite, Virtuosa, Elevation Plus) lists the 10-year version. The wording is the same across all four; only the length changes.
- Covered: “manufacturing defects in material and workmanship.” Samsonite “will, in its discretion, either fix or replace” the bag.
- Not covered: “misuse (such as transportation of unusual items), neglect, accidents, abrasion, exposure to extreme temperatures, solvents, acids, water, normal wear and tear or transport damage (by airlines for example).”
- Cracks and dents: the FAQ says “cracked or dented luggage is not repairable and is not considered a manufacturing defect.” For a hardside bag, that’s the damage you’re most likely to see.
- Who: the first buyer or gift recipient only. Registration is optional; Samsonite says the details it needs are on the tag inside your bag.
- Repairs: only at an approved Samsonite service center; repairs done elsewhere can void the warranty.
How a warranty claim works
- Create a repair request through Samsonite’s Service & Repairs page.
- Ship the bag to the Authorized Repair Center at your own cost (Samsonite recommends a tracked carrier), or drop it at a Samsonite Company Store, which ships it for $15 (22 inches or under) or $20 (23 inches or larger). Don’t mail it to a store.
- The repair center decides. If it’s covered and repairable, Samsonite pays for the repair. If it’s covered but not repairable, you’re offered a “comparable warranty replacement.” If it isn’t covered, you can pay for the repair, get the bag back unrepaired, or have it thrown away.
How it compares: Briggs & Riley repairs airline damage for life, Away covers airline damage for five years, and Travelpro covers it through its Trusted Companion Promise (for as long as you own a Platinum Elite softside bag, but only the first year on the Maxlite 5). Samsonite’s warranty is long, but narrow.
The Samsonite lines worth considering
Samsonite listed 31 carry-ons on shop.samsonite.com on November 3, 2026. These are the ones independent testers picked, plus the two that fit the strict US limit. Prices are Samsonite’s own on November 3, 2026, before its “extra 10% off” promo code; sizes and weights are from Samsonite’s product pages.
| Carry-on | Price (Nov 3, 2026) | Size with wheels (in) | Weight | Shell | What testers said |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freeform | $149.99 (“Comp. Value” $219.99) | 23 x 15 x 10 | 6.5 lb | Polypropylene | OutdoorGearLab Best Buy (69); Forbes Best Value |
| Outline Pro | $219.99 | 23 x 15 x 10 | 6.4 to 6.9 lb (page lists both) | Polypropylene, USB port | Business Insider best hard-sided |
| Virtuosa | $153.99 (“Comp. Value” $219.99) | 23 x 15 x 10 | 6.4 lb | Polycarbonate | No test found |
| Voltage DLX Global | $124.99 (“Comp. Value” $209.99) | 22 x 14 x 9 | 6.1 lb | Polypropylene, USB port | No test found |
| Proxis Global | $500.00 | 22 x 14 x 9 | 4.6 to 4.7 lb | Roxkin | Forbes Best Lightweight Hardside |
| C-Lite | $500.00 | 21.6 x 15.8 x 7.9 | 4.5 lb | Curv | No test found |
| Elevation Plus Softside | $249.99 | 24.5 x 15.8 x 10.5 | 8.2 lb | Softside | No test found |
Freeform: the value pick
The Freeform is the Samsonite most people should look at first. OutdoorGearLab gave it its Best Buy award (score 69) and measured 41.2 liters inside, “plenty for a long weekend,” and Forbes Vetted named it its Best Value carry-on. The weak spots are consistent: OutdoorGearLab lists a “weak trolley handle” and says it “easily scratches,” adding “we’re less confident that the Freeform Spinner will hold out during years of heavy use,” and Forbes found its polypropylene shell “not as durable as some of our other hardside picks.” At $149.99 it’s a good deal. At its $219.99 “Comp. Value” it would be a harder sell.
Outline Pro: more features, more scuffs
Business Insider picked the Outline Pro as its best hard-sided carry-on for its price, light weight, 1-inch expansion and USB port for your own battery. Its tester also found the handle “a tad short” and said it “showed many more scuffs and scratches after our durability tests than other bags I’ve tested.” Samsonite’s own page lists two different weights (6.4 and 6.9 pounds).
Proxis Global and Voltage DLX Global: the ones that truly fit
If your airline measures bags, these two match 22 x 14 x 9 on paper. The Proxis Global is very light (about 4.7 pounds) and was Forbes’ Best Lightweight Hardside pick, but Forbes calls its interior “less-than-roomy” (35 liters) and it costs $500. The Voltage DLX Global is the budget way to get a bag that fits, at $124.99 on sale. We found no independent test of the Voltage DLX.
What about Omni 2, Omni PC, Winfield or Evoa? You’ll see them at other retailers, but none were in Samsonite’s own list of 31 carry-ons on November 3, 2026, so we couldn’t check their current official specs. Compare any of them against the airline sizes below before you buy.

Samsonite carry-on sizes vs airline limits
American says a carry-on “cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches … including handles and wheels.” Delta uses the same 22 x 14 x 9 and adds a 45 linear-inch cap, also counting wheels and handles. Southwest is more generous at 24 x 16 x 10 inches. Samsonite’s own carry-on guide lists United at 22 x 14 x 9 as well; we couldn’t load United’s page to confirm it.
| Samsonite carry-on | Size (in) | Linear inches | American / Delta (22 x 14 x 9, 45 linear) | Southwest (24 x 16 x 10) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freeform, Outline Pro, Virtuosa | 23 x 15 x 10 | 48 | Over by 1 inch each way | Fits |
| Voltage DLX Global | 22 x 14 x 9 | 45 | Fits | Fits |
| Proxis Global | 22 x 14 x 9 | 45 | Fits | Fits |
| C-Lite | 21.6 x 15.8 x 7.9 | 45.3 | Too wide (15.8 in) | Fits |
| Elevation Plus Softside | 24.5 x 15.8 x 10.5 | 50.8 | Over | Over (too long) |
A bag that’s over on paper often still fits in the overhead bin, and Samsonite itself sells the 23-inch models as carry-ons. But if a gate agent puts it in the sizer, you may have to check it. If you fly budget airlines or small regional planes, buy one of the “Global” models that matches 22 x 14 x 9.
Complaints, reviews and recalls
- BBB: D-, not accredited, because of “failure to respond to 25 complaint(s).” There were 73 complaints in three years, 45 of them about service or repair. In the eight most recent complaints (June to October 2026), seven were unanswered. Customers described wheels where “the rubber … is starting to disintegrate,” a zipper that “completely separated during normal use,” stitching that came apart after one trip, and a claim that Samsonite “refused to honor what was represented as a 5-year warranty.”
- Trustpilot: 3.8 from 1,382 reviews, but 59% are one-star and 32% five-star. Samsonite has replied to 86% of the negative ones. This profile is Samsonite’s global one (listed in Belgium), so not all reviews are about US orders. Common complaints: lost deliveries, defective zippers and repairs that were only partly done.
- Recalls: the only CPSC recall we found is for Samsonite travel converter kits in 2013 (fire hazard), not luggage. Samsonite also pulled its Tokyo Chic luggage worldwide in 2012 after a chemical finding on the handles in Hong Kong.
- Lawsuits: a 2025 proposed class action (McCarty v. Samsonite Company Stores, Southern District of California) says Samsonite’s outlet stores advertise discounts from inflated “original” prices. It’s an allegation, not a finding, and we couldn’t confirm its current status. A similar 2019 case was dismissed in 2020. Our advice is the same either way: judge the sale price on its own and ignore the “Comp. Value.”
Returns and buying direct
Samsonite’s return policy page allows returns of unused items “within 90 days of the original shipped date,” with tags and packaging intact. Some product pages say 60 days instead, so plan on 60. You get a prepaid label, but $14.99 is taken off your refund for luggage unless the item arrived damaged or wrong. There are no exchanges, online orders can’t be returned in a store, and orders can’t be changed or cancelled once confirmed.

Samsonite vs Travelpro
This is the matchup most carry-on shoppers end up at. Samsonite is mostly hardside and usually cheaper on sale; Travelpro is mostly softside, built around flight crews, and has the better airline-damage cover on its top line. Samsonite facts are from its official pages on November 3, 2026; Travelpro facts are from Travelpro’s official pages checked October 31 and November 1, 2026 (see our Travelpro review).
| Samsonite | Travelpro | |
|---|---|---|
| Founded / owner | 1910; Samsonite Group S.A. (public, Hong Kong) | 1987 by airline pilot Bob Plath; private equity (MidOcean Partners) since 2016 |
| Best-tested carry-on | Freeform: OutdoorGearLab Best Buy (69) | Platinum Elite: OutdoorGearLab Best Overall (92) |
| Typical price | Freeform $149.99 on sale (Nov 3) | Platinum Elite $390 (Oct 31); Maxlite 5 $148 on sale (Nov 1) |
| Size of the popular carry-on | 23 x 15 x 10 in (Freeform) | 23.5 x 14.5 x 9 in (Platinum Elite); 23 in tall (Maxlite 5) |
| Warranty length | 10 years (most carry-ons) | Lifetime, defects in wheels, zippers and handles |
| Airline damage | Not covered | Covered by Trusted Companion Promise: Platinum Elite softside for as long as you own it, hardside 5 years, Maxlite 5 first year |
| Returns | 60 to 90 days, unused; $14.99 deducted | 100 days, unused; free return label |
| BBB | D-, 25 complaints unanswered (73 in 3 years) | C-, 226 complaints in 3 years |
| Trustpilot | 3.8 (1,382 reviews, 59% one-star) | 3.6 (1,209 reviews, 31% one-star) |
Pick Samsonite if you want a hardside bag and the best price, and you rarely check your carry-on. Pick Travelpro if you fly often, prefer softside pockets, and want airline damage covered (the Platinum Elite costs more than twice as much). Both have heavy complaint loads, and neither popular carry-on is 22 x 14 x 9 on paper.

Who should buy Samsonite, and who should skip it
- Buy it if: you want a tested hardside carry-on at a fair price (Freeform on sale), a bag that fits strict sizers (Voltage DLX Global or Proxis Global), or a brand Good Housekeeping’s testers rate highly for everyday use.
- Skip it if: you want airline damage covered (Briggs & Riley covers it for life, Away for five years), you hate scuffs (testers saw them on both the Freeform and Outline Pro), or you need a company that answers complaints quickly. Also skip the 23-inch models if you fly airlines that measure every bag.

FAQ
Is Samsonite good luggage?
Yes for the price. Independent testers picked the Freeform as a best-value carry-on (OutdoorGearLab, Forbes Vetted) and the Outline Pro as Business Insider’s best hard-sided carry-on, and Good Housekeeping named Samsonite its best overall brand. The trade-offs: shells that scuff, a warranty that excludes airline damage, and a BBB D- for unanswered complaints.
Does Samsonite’s warranty cover airline damage?
No. The warranty covers manufacturing defects only and excludes “transport damage (by airlines for example),” plus wear and tear, abrasion and accidents. Samsonite’s FAQ also says cracked or dented luggage is not considered a manufacturing defect. File airline damage with the airline instead.
Is the Samsonite Freeform carry-on 22 x 14 x 9?
No. Samsonite lists the Freeform carry-on at 23 x 15 x 10 inches (48 linear inches), about an inch over the 22 x 14 x 9 limit American and Delta publish. Samsonite’s Voltage DLX Global and Proxis Global are 22 x 14 x 9.
Samsonite vs Travelpro: which is better?
Samsonite is cheaper on sale and strong for hardside bags; the Freeform was $149.99 on Nov 3, 2026. Travelpro’s Platinum Elite ($390) scored higher in OutdoorGearLab’s tests (92 vs 69 for the Freeform) and covers airline damage through its Trusted Companion Promise, which Samsonite doesn’t.
How do I make a Samsonite warranty claim?
Submit a repair request on Samsonite’s Service & Repairs page, then ship the bag to the Authorized Repair Center at your own cost, or drop it at a Samsonite Company Store, which ships it for $15 or $20 depending on size. The repair center decides whether it’s covered.
What is Samsonite’s return policy?
Samsonite’s return policy page allows returns of unused items within 90 days of shipping, but some product pages say 60 days. A $14.99 return shipping fee is deducted for luggage unless it arrived damaged or wrong, and there are no exchanges.
