Quick verdict
A Pelican case is the hard, waterproof, crushproof box that photographers, pilots, hunters and techs trust with expensive gear. The best seller is the 1510 Protector Carry-On: IP67 waterproof (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes), rated from -40°F to 190°F, made in the USA, and covered by a limited lifetime warranty. It costs $229.95 empty or $269.95 with foam. TechRadar said “you won’t find a better solution,” and Digital Camera World said the “peace of mind means it’s worth it.”
The honest part: Pelicans are heavy and expensive, and the company’s customer service record is weak: the BBB rates Pelican C- for failing to respond to 9 complaints, and its returns page says both 15 and 30 days. The warranty is real but never covers the foam or what’s inside, and you pay shipping on claims.
Our picks: 1510 Protector for the toughest carry-on. 1535 Air ($269.95) if every pound counts when flying, since it’s about 3.3 lb lighter. V525 Vault ($139.95) if you just need a tough box on a budget and don’t need waterproofing.

Which Pelican case should you buy?
| Case | Price (2026-10-31) | Weight (empty) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1510 Protector Carry-On | $229.95 empty / $269.95 foam | 11.99 lb | Toughest carry-on; cameras, drones, tools |
| 1535 Air Carry-On | $269.95 empty / $314.95 foam | 8.69 lb | Flying with a weight limit |
| iM2500 Storm Carry-On | same as 1510 | 11.10 lb | Alternative carry-on design |
| V525 Vault (rolling) | $139.95 empty / $149.95 foam | 11.50 lb with foam | Budget; not waterproof |
| 1615 Air (check-in) | from $369.95 | 14.06 lb | Large gear, checked bag |
| 1450 Protector | from $152.95 | 5.51 lb | Mid-size gear, handguns, lenses |
| 1200 Protector | from $69.95 | 2.55 lb | Small camera, drone parts |
| 1150 Protector | from $49.95 | 1.61 lb | Phones, small electronics |
Prices from pelican.com on October 31, 2026. The 1510 also comes with padded dividers ($314.95), TrekPak dividers ($349.95) or a TrekPak/foam hybrid ($319.95). Heads up: “No Foam” means the case ships empty.
Pelican Air vs Protector
The Air line uses a lighter polymer to cut weight: the 1535 Air carry-on is 8.69 lb empty versus 11.99 lb for the 1510 Protector, about 3.3 lb lighter, which matters with airline carry-on weight limits. The trade-offs: it costs $40 to $45 more, its temperature rating is narrower (0°F to 140°F versus -40°F to 190°F), and The-Digital-Picture measured about 3 times more lid flex than the 1510. Both are IP67.
Pelican Vault vs Protector
The Vault line is Pelican’s budget option. The V525 rolling case is $139.95 empty, about $90 less than the 1510. But its page only says “weather-resistant” with no IP rating, so don’t count on it to survive a dunk, and its warranty is 3 years for the original buyer instead of lifetime. Fine for a truck bed or garage; pick a Protector for water, boats or air travel.
Using a Pelican as a gun case
“Pelican gun case” is a big search, and models like the 1450 and long cases are popular for firearms. Pelican cases are lockable, but locks are sold separately. If you’re flying, follow the TSA’s firearm rules and your airline’s policy, and check state and local laws where you travel.
The warranty and returns, honestly
- Lifetime warranty: Pelican covers its cases against breakage and defects for life (Vault: 3 years). It also promises the case stays watertight to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
- Not covered: foam, inserts and the contents of the case, plus damage from abuse or accidents. You pay shipping on warranty claims, and handling and repair costs if Pelican decides the case isn’t defective.
- Returns: Pelican’s returns page says 15 days in one place and 30 days in another, and its FAQ says 15. Product pages show a “Free Returns” badge, but the policy doesn’t say who pays shipping for a change-of-mind return. Plan on 15 days to be safe.
- Shipping: free ground shipping on orders of $165 or more.
Company and customer service
Pelican Products was founded in 1976 and is based in Torrance, California; according to Pelican’s own press release, it’s owned by Platinum Equity. The BBB rates it C- (not accredited) for “Failure to respond to 9 complaint(s),” including a refund delayed more than 20 business days. Its Trustpilot page is unclaimed, with a 1.9 score from just 18 reviews. The only CPSC recall we found was for Pelican flashlights in 2016, not cases.
Pelican vs Nanuk, SKB and Harbor Freight Apache
| Case | Price | Waterproof | Warranty | Made in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pelican 1510 (foam) | $269.95 | IP67 | Lifetime | USA |
| NANUK 935 (foam) | $254.95 | IP67 | Lifetime | Canada |
| SKB iSeries 2011-7 | from $199.99 | Waterproof | Lifetime (original owner) | USA |
| Harbor Freight Apache 5800 | $89.99 | Weatherproof | not found | not found |
Nanuk is the closest rival and slightly cheaper with a similar rating and warranty. SKB is also US-made. Harbor Freight’s Apache costs about a third as much and is well rated by its own shoppers (4.6 stars from 1,081 reviews), but we couldn’t confirm its specs or warranty. For gear you can’t afford to lose to water or a baggage handler, the Pelican or Nanuk is worth the premium.
Who should buy a Pelican
- Good fit: cameras, drones, test equipment, firearms and anything that rides in a truck, a boat or an airplane’s cargo hold.
- Skip it if: weight matters more than toughness (look at the Air line or a padded bag), or you just need a dry box for the garage (a Vault or Apache costs far less).
FAQ
Is a Pelican case worth the money?
For expensive gear that faces water, drops or air travel, yes: Protector cases are IP67 waterproof, crushproof and covered by a lifetime warranty. If you only need a tough box for the garage, a Pelican Vault ($139.95) or Harbor Freight Apache costs much less.
Is the Pelican 1510 carry-on size?
Pelican calls the 1510 “maximum airline carry-on size.” Airline limits vary, so check your airline’s carry-on dimensions and weight limit; the 1510 weighs about 12 lb empty.
What is the difference between Pelican Air and Protector?
Air cases are lighter: the 1535 Air carry-on is 8.69 lb versus 11.99 lb for the 1510 Protector. Air costs $40 to $45 more, has a narrower temperature rating (0°F to 140°F) and a reviewer measured more lid flex. Both are IP67 waterproof.
Are Pelican Vault cases waterproof?
Pelican only calls the V525 Vault “weather-resistant,” with no IP rating, so it isn’t sold as waterproof. Vault cases also have a 3-year warranty instead of lifetime.
What does the Pelican lifetime warranty cover?
Breakage and defects for the life of the case (except Vault, which gets 3 years), plus a promise that it stays watertight to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It doesn’t cover foam, contents, abuse or accidents, and you pay shipping on claims.
Are Pelican cases made in the USA?
The Pelican product pages we checked say “Made in USA.” The company is based in Torrance, California.
Pelican vs Nanuk: which is better?
They’re close. The NANUK 935 is $254.95 with foam, IP67 and lifetime-warrantied, made in Canada; the Pelican 1510 is $269.95 with foam, IP67 and made in the USA. Pick on fit, weight and price for your gear.
Can I return a Pelican case?
Pelican’s returns page lists both 15 and 30 days, and its FAQ says 15, so plan on 15 days. The policy doesn’t say who pays shipping for a change-of-mind return.
